What i think this quote means is that if you think your doing something good never means its always going to be right.For example if you are in your math class and your teacher is teaching you simple math and than gives you a test and you do very good and get an A for the class and than when its time to review the math you don't get it and the teacher starts to get suspicious. And they start questioning them selves if they where going to fast for you and they notice you are not getting it and the answers are wrong. So then they think if you got the test right but not the assignments than your cheating. " i trust that my hard work will pay off." what this means is that if you do what you do and study than you will do good on whatever your trying to study for. For example in the video we just saw that the boy was practicing on the morning since he was a little boy he would wake up and gpo with his father and play horse and free shots and see if he can not drop the ball and since he did that everyday in the morning one day that there where playing horse he did all the throws and made them. And he didn't miss a single shot he made them all in the basketball court. Than when he was old enough he played for byu and became the 2nd legend in byu best basketball player. whenever the boy   through his ball he was thought about was the day when we would do many free shots with his dad and he would be right next to him.
